Personal Motive_
Today, what we try to communicate through digital communication mediums and what is perceived by others has a wide gap in between. Even with advancing technology, as we grow in time, we are losing the essence of real digital communication. Living away from family, I have realised the struggle one faces managing relationships around the globe. Coincidentally, Covid-19 spread during the start of our project, what better time could it have chosen?
Brief_
How can we make digital communication more human by using advanced technology yet restoring the notions of the past?
Communication_
We humans communicate information, ideas, thoughts and feelings through various methods like speech, writing, signal and behaviour.
Distant vs Face-to-face communication_
Face to face communication is true human interaction allowing people to interact, discuss issues and build synergy together whereas distant digital communication is a poor subsitute because there are many barriers that come in play when transferring information from one point to another.
◎ A variety of stories_
Thanks to Coronavirus, we video-called people around the world to understand in depth their relationships with people, devices and mediums they use for communication.
Target groups_
Combing the traits of the different users that we interviewed, we formed some target groups - White Collar group, Socialista group and the Hustling group.
User_hustler
We studied the user group and went into the details of his day - to understand his usage of gadgets, his relationships with people and the different struggles he faces.
Why him?
Coherency in social and work life
Dependent on distant communication
Highly cognitive tolerance
A day in the life
The day of the hustler can be broadly divided into work and personal.
Relationships and Gadgets_
His daily communication depends on his relationships with people, the distance between them and the medium he uses to communicate with them.
Insights_
After studying in depth his day, we realised the different stuggles he faces with maintaining his different relationships with people.
Directions_
Al the insights gave us the lead to different opportunities and hence we formed directions that would help us in ideation for the solution.
Creativity Process_
After the analysis, we took the directions as triggers to begin our creative process in order to reach our final product experience.
Multiple stories to 1_
We came down to 3 product stories, out of which one seemed to pass all our filters.
Detailing Function and Form_
We had a concept but to make it concrete, we brainstormed on precise functions and forms.
A New Portal_
Introducing Oriel, a try a bring back the essence of communication through digital platforms.
ORIEL
An opening to a new experience
The screen is no longer a limit.
Find a suitable spot!_
Don't have a suitable surface to clamp? No problem. Just dock it and project!
As simple as press and push_
Easily secure on the surface with some intuitive gestures.
Press. Push.
Clamp and get feedback_
The device will do the rest by firmly attaching to the surface and giving a feedback in return.
Visual and haptic feedback to know if it's well placed
Greet and activate_
Politeness has its importance, by a simple "Hey O", Oriel activates and gives you the important information of the day.
Oriel acknowledges you personally
Projector_
Oriel has a laser projector that projects on the surface at a 45 degree angle.
Angular projection
Resizing_
The projection allows a freedom of size that will adapt to all your environments.
Simple rotary gesture
An inextricable link_
By being connected to your devices, enjoy the power of an ecosystem.
You have the control_
Camera reveal gesture mimics opening a door
Say Hi!_
Use hand gestures to interact with Oriel and have human effects - like curtain opening to avoid abrupt hellos and goodbyes.
Got you covered_
The sensors and camera let roam around freely without restricting to a frame and understanding when the other person is looking at you.
No restriction to frame
Eye contact
Tracking_
The screen rotates around a ball and socket joint allowing movement for camera and the sensors to capture you in motion.
Movement of screen
Wide angle camera elimination to capture movement
Directional Sound_
Our brain needs 360 degree sound in order to spatially understand space and linking sound with direction to understand where its coming from. Spacial sound helps user be more immersed in conversations by immitating a real life scenario.
Direction 360 degrees speaker
Manage screen time_
With polite human gestures, Oriel tries to limit your screen time.
No suitable surface to clamp?_
No problem. Just dock it and project!
Dock and Charge_
Two ways to charge - Induction cable or the induction dock!
Branding_
Oriel - An extension to a space - A protuding window describing the extension to communication the product gives.
Logo depiction - A projection of light falling on a surface
Customise to your need_
Form colour and finish combinations that would fit into your home environment.
Just a click away_
Online buying experience to customise your purchase
Personalised selection
Packaging and case_
Packaging reusable as a portable case // sustainable approach
Product visible inside packaging
Oriel - Manual - Induction charging cable
User Feedbacks_
After the analysis, we took the opportunities as triggers to begin our creative process in order to reach our final product experience.
